Football in Mauritius

Mauritians are as passionate about football as they are about politics. Football is famous from the old people to the youngest, from boys to girls! Everybody has a word to say about their favorite team. Everybody is so fervent when there is a hot match coming up!

All that is good and highly enjoyable.

However, there is one thing I find kind of sad. All this excitement is geared towards foreign countries’ football teams! I really wished that we can get so full and heated up about teams in our own country. To go to the stadiums to watch a live football match. To have that same spirit rising in the crowd. People wearing their teams’ colors to show support! To cry and shout, to jump with joy when your team scores, to get angry and dissapointed when you lose! To have skilled and remarkable players! To have a national league worth following!

Wouldn’t that be just awesome? *sigh*

I really cannot understand why we cannot have this here! The Government invests enough in Sports, doesn’t it? Or is it just that Mauritians ain’t good football players? I don’t want to believe that! 😦

And yeah, Go ManU!!!! 😀

  1. Love that post ! well written Anissa, the very true fact that Football in this country was such a great thing about before.. if you go back in year 2000 if am not mistaken these great football teams “Scouts club, cadets, sunrise, Fire ” thats where all Mauritians would go to the stadiums and that would be the sunday afternoon of a Mauritian.. back in 2003 think when ther was the Indian Ocean games and the flame in the heart of the mauritians shouting “Allez Maurice” yet, a big question mark on the new football teams created…. which i find funny btw

Hey Aniisah, i think that Mauritius got good players and also still have the spirit of enjoying a football match and the age group of supporters is various! Take example in inter-college, surely you know how a college motivates its players and also support them, the take a match between Mancherster United and Liverpool( *_*) the ambeince at home is extraordinary!!! At my house my uncles and dad are livepool fan and my cousins and i are Men Utd (4ever!!) fan.. the ambience that day is simply amazing!!!
My point is that selection of football players has become rather poor nowadays. And also opportunity to play in a league in mauritius somewht @$#% LOL
